So I got so bored while on my holidays that I’ve just went and got myself a webhost and my own domain. And since I didn’t exactly do much new, and I was pretty much wondering what I would do with my first post over here, I decided I might as well just rehash my old pics and take a trip down memory lane in the process. So bear with me till I get back from my hols I guess. Lots of reading follows if you’re interested.
So…. why “theshino.com”? Those that known me since I’ve started know abt pvc4me (now defunct) and the current pvc4u, not so subtle hints on how much I was into figures back then. But then all roads lead somewhere, and before I knew it, now I’m spending more on PC games than I do on figures, so pvc in the title didn’t seem too appropriate no more. I still collect my fair share of them definitely, but it isn’t what it used to be. I toyed with the idea of pvc4u-PvC4me but well, hyphens don’t really sit too well with me considering how much of a bitch they are to key in.
the shino~! came as a running joke since I liked to emphasize how frickin awesome I am in private conversations by always expounding that term as soon as I say something smart or witty. Trust me, I act nice and all that while being viewed by the public, but in private, I’m a right asshole. So the domain name can be seen as a crystalization and admission of how much of an ass I am to those that know me. Still with me? Sweet, lets go a little ways back to where it all began now.
So off the top of my head, I’d say I started collecting figures late 2006, most of you probably already know that all I wanted was a nice fate/stay night collection and back then, I was honestly thinking it would just stop there once I’m done with f/sn. Just goes to show that we’ll never know, hell I wouldn’t have even imagined me getting my own domain and all that and if anyone suggested this to me back then, I’d say they were stark raving mad.
The photo taking came around by chance, since I was buying figures non-stop and one day, I decided I was lonely and decided I wanted to share it with others. So by chance, I stumbled upon figure.fm (now defunct as well) and suddenly, the spam monster in me was unleashed!

One of the first few photos I took of a figure. Pretty frickin sad that I actually had to raid the printer for paper and stick it around a detolf as the white background. Hey, the detolf area back then was the most brightly lit area in the house and unfortunately, lights and all those for photo setups don’t just appear when you decide to take photos. Like I said, photo taking wasn’t really a serious consideration back then.

One of those crazy buys I had during the early days as well. I liked Kanu back then, but what I wanted was the first version of this figure (Black loli), I’m sure if you digged back into my fig.fm past, I probably said everything nice I could about this figure but meh, it certainly isn’t my first choice. Sonsaku back there was pretty cool though, albeit a bit too small for my liking now. So I moved out from taking photos in the detolfs now and switched to some place in the house just under a spotlight :p

Then along came super rats and his awesome photos and I think it was at this point where I got more serious into photo taking. Looking back, I must apologize for always crediting him and his tutorials everytime I posted a crap photo. For every thanks I gave, he must have lost at least 10 readers (10 because I guess thats the number who ever bothered to look) who were appalled at my level of photo taking and here I was crediting him for my “now-awesome” photos. lol.

So I haven’t gotten into those large cardboard sized backgrounds yet and I got bored of the plain old printer paper backgrounds. So I figured to go cheap and get myself a stack of colored paper just so I could have more colorful backgrounds. I think I liked those colors and variations I could get, but I seriously hated the shadows and areas where I didn’t stick the pieces together nicely. From here, I was on my way to to the more crazy setups that would become a sort of staple to my other shoots.

What can I say? I bought a stack of those colorful papers, I had to use them someway or other. I bought the stack because I wanted to be cheap, so that wasn’t gonna change overnight and still I went on with some really awful ideas.

So more crazy ideas came along, and I already started dabbling in model kits by then, and now I had paint to play around with. Back then I never did go out purposely for prop shopping, even the little red bulb things you see on Rin’s background was a free gift that came from an ebay seller after I bought an artbook.

An idea gone terribly bad. Sometimes I wonder what I was smoking when I follow through with ideas like these. Smoke and fire yo!

One of my first few props that would see me recycle for many, many more shoots to come. Rocks (pebbles) rock ^^;

The photo that probably started me off on decorating my sets like mad I guess. I still have no clue why I ever bought win-chan in the first place, but without her, this photo and the resulting madness would likely not have happened.

So up till that certain point, I was still using a Nikon E4300 coolpix that was apparently all the rage back when I first got it (like: woah! 4 megapixels!). The lenses had some scratches already, the battery wasn’t doing too great, and the file size of the photos taken I noticed were pretty damned large and my 16mb card wasn’t too pleased about that. So I took another plunge and went and got myself a DSLR even though I had absolutely no clue what I was getting myself into. Probably the same deal applies to what I’m thinking now getting my own site :p

So being the very smart and awesome individual that I am (the shino~!), I bought a DSLR without a tripod and soon relied on using novels from around the house to serve as the impromptu tripod (reading is a good habit). My hands aren’t exactly the steadiest, and the DSLR was a bit too sensitive for me to take my photos freehand, and I really do somewhat miss those consumer cameras for that aspect. I used to be poking my lenses at every angle imaginable with the Nikon, and I can’t quite do that already. And thus the spam monster in me was quelled.

But with the DSLR, I started to play around more as well, fooling around with HDR shots and just messing with settings in particular. Setups also began to grow more elaborate as I tried to mish mash everything that I’ve come across and thought of. There were more lemons than gems definitely, but hey… it’s… the shino~! ^^;

And this little gem of a bright idea started my downfall, there was this debate about figures and gundams which I’m sure some will remember and I decided to post this pic (guess I didn’t quite hide how much of an ass I was too well really) and got myself moderated at the speed of light. All I have to say is that gundam lovers must really love their gundams that no room for figures or humor can exist.

So it has come full circle into really overdone sets and HDR photos. More attention is now diverted to PC games and now there’s lots of awesome figure reviewers out there anyway so I doubt I’ll be missed one bit. But once in a while the itch sets in and I’ll have to start taking photos I guess.

It probably sounds really old, but in closing I’d just like to thank everyone that I’ve met since I started collecting. I don’t know where this blog will end up as much as I didn’t know where I’d be today back when I first started collecting. But even if I fade from existence, I’d like to take the time to thank (in no particular order): aka_ugly, super rats, lu-k, ron~, valho, radiant dreamer, Belela-san (the old guard? ^^), and everyone else on my blogroll that I’ve met from start to present. Thanks for the advise, comments, support, and every little thing that I’ve probably learned from you but don’t even realize. I do wish I could comment more, that in spite of this helluva lengthy post, I wish i had more things to say and add to discussion when you guys post, but in any case, here’s to more of seeing each other around!
To those that made it here, thanks for the patience, 1600 words ain’t my idea of fun really, and it’s not something I’ll do too often seeing as it takes quite a while to type and makes me smoke like mad. And now the question is: How much of this is the real private shino or is he just being the pretend mr. public nice guy once again? :p Whatever the case, welcome to the shino~ I hope you’ll enjoy your stay here =)

![『airy[F]airy (エアリィフェアリィ)』応援中!](http://rococoworks.com/airyfairy/img/aid/afa_bnt03.jpg)

So it’s come to this huh? I think anyone that you’ve let close to you knows what a self-loving, know-it-all prick you are. But that’s the side of you that we all have groan (pun intended) to love. I’m actually still wondering who’s the real shino. Maybe it’s a jekyll & hyde thing?
But I think it’s pretty sweet you have your own digs now. You really deserve your own site. Nobody combines witty banter with awesome figure pics and a dash of eroge like you. Hell, I hate figures now, don’t give two shits about eroge and I still make time out of my busy (…) schedule to visit your blargh, er blog.
Anyway, I don’t wanna get sappy, though I had no problem being downright vicious with my comments, but I hope you have fun messing around with your new site. I have no qualms saying I skipped most write ups when I visited figure blogs, but always had a few chuckles reading yours. There really is nobody like the shino~!
And one last thing: WHORE OUT. This site deserves readers. We love you, man. That is all~ ;p
@aka_ugly: Sssshhh…. According to the unaccording, nobody really reads those first few paragraphs in a post, so you really shouldn’t be letting on that I’m such-and-such a prick at this critical point in a post =x
It’s ok to hate on figures, but how can you not love the pretty boxes of eroges?!?!?! What do u think I buy eroges for? The story? The art? Hell nooooo~~ Boxes yo!!
It wasn’t quite so fun while messing around with the site, though now it feels as though it had been fun for me. The only fun I really had with the site is the back to top button really. Weeeeee~~
Yo nice skin on your new site ^_^ .
.
. Although I may not comment sometimes, I will always keep an eye out through google reader and coming here of course.
So that’s the story behind shinoai/hai (whatever), theshino, I “loled” pretty hard
I liked what you mentioned about the old guard, well we kinda are aren’t we?! Since figure.fm we all stayed in touch through blogging and msn
May the “Shino” be with you XD
@Belela-san: Thanks =) This template definitely came up tops among the many that I shortlisted, so I’m glad you liked it.
Shinohai (死の灰 – translated loosely as ashes of death) actually is a song title from L’arc-en-ciel’s Ray album, and when I first listened to the album (1999), guess I was full of teenage angst then and I didn’t know a word of Japanese back then and have no clue what the song was about actually, but heck, the song had death in the title, so YEAH~~!!! And I just kept using that as a nick/handle since then ^^;
And with all the talk about teenage angst and old guard, jeez, time is really merciless, no more teenage rebellion, I’ll just stick to being a bitter old fart ^^;
Congrats on your new hosting! It’s good to see that you’ve finally got a place you can call “home”. I haven’t seen you in ages, but it’s good to know that you’re still alive and kicking. Honestly, the only place I get news from you now is through the internets.
I quite like your new blog layout. The random pic in the top left is a nice touch! Seeing some of these really bring back memories. It’s good to see that some of my favorite photos are shown here.
I know what you mean by the urge to do figure reviews diminishing. I get that too, and once in a while, I gotta do a review here and there when the itch returns.
It’s awesome seeing you get a new site, man.
And as aka_ugly said, WHORE OUT! Updating my blogroll, NOW.
@radiant: Thanks =) At certain points during those ages I wish I were dead and buried actually, it’s been one roller coaster of a ride so far but I’m hoping this holiday helps to fix my head a little (‘_’)
Glad you like the layout, I’m pretty enjoying the random pics displayed too, which is one of the reasons I decided to get my own host, so I can mess around with pretty templates and all that, and hopefully learn something in the process.
When I got to the point of feeling that all my pics are starting to look the same, I just figured it would be nice to just let it go and just move on to other stuff. No sense giving myself a time limit to reinvent myself or whatever, it’s all about having fun with what you’re doing, so meh, better not force myself and kill whatever joy I have left when taking pics, if it happens, it happens
You are so right. That is exactly what was happening to me. I started taking pix and doing photoshop for the sake of the blog, rather than for my own enjoyment, and when I realized that, I stopped for a bit. It’s a cycle I would not want to be stuck in any more.
Hits are all fine and dandy, and really help in justifying the existence of the blog, as well as the work I put into it, but when it became the source of the motivation to do it rather than the work itself, it was no longer fun.
It’s good that you managed to break out of that, and enjoy what you do for yourself rather than for others.
I’ve adopted the Vigilance theme now, sort of as a tribute to your past. You’re right! It’s quite customizable! But it still isn’t quite there compared to some of the great custom themes out there. (I like the little graphic at the footer of your site too. Very pretty!)
@radant: Yeps, all in all, the themes provided by wordpress still only go so far in terms of customization, so if since I was getting bored of posting stuff and all that, might as well just get my own host and do something new like messing around with themes :p Who knows? That might spark some new ideas in the process =)
grats for the new site and the new domain!
I like this theme a lot more than the old one, the top left hole with image is really cool!
heh that’s long read, but I’ve learned some photo techniques from you (and others) as well
that’s the best part of blogging, to share knowledge
@ron~: Thanks! =)
The old theme back at wordpress actually provided a bit more customization than the even older ones I used, but the themes in wordpress.com always had their limitations. I’m definitely preferring this theme a lot more than the old one as well. heheh ^_^
Yeah, I’m hoping there won’t have to be such a long read ever again definitely. Well maybe on the 10th anniversary if it ever happens, lol. And if that really does happen, I’m sure I’ll have learned a lot more things from many others as well ^^
Oh, so that’s how u make those awesomely incredible jazzy photos. If u never said anything, then I would’ve never known. lol
I understand the move on. When you find, u have achieved a collection to ur desire, it’s common to see seek out hobbies you may like.
I was starting to get bored myself when I had a collection of 20 but then the desire to create a blog and share my collection just fueled me to amass a collection 5 times that much. The whole terms of my review is more of a personal one than to give to my readers. Readers are important but enjoying what I write about is important as well. Most of the time, when I look a back at my past archive, I can say to myself, I’ve said that in all honesty with no regrets.
Nice self-hosted theme. As many said, the left random image is pretty cool. ^^
Updated ur site on my blogroll.
@Optic: Not really a move on per se, and I can’t exactly say I’ve achieved the collection of my desire since I’m still buying the figures on impulse with not effort to convince myself to say no ^^; I think I just dread the time where somebody finally comes out and says what gives with all the similar photos? ^^;
I still pretty much blog for my own satisfaction, which is why since I’m already feeling that my pics look the same, me being my own worst critic figures I should just take it easy for now and try out other stuff that I can be happy with. If I’m not happy with my stuff, I think that conveys very much to whatever readers I have anyway, so it’s all linked no matter what anyways =)
Aaaah! You returned! I waited for your return with big impatience. Besides, you return with a magnificent article with heights of photos!
@Leonia: Sorry for the long wait =( I’m feeling that after such a long holiday, I’m raring to try and take some pics and do some reviews again and hopefully I wouldn’t be disappointing you once I get back =)
[...] but it really did feel like posting for the sake of posting. It wasn’t until I read Shino’s new blog entry that I felt something important had left me, and that I needed to get it [...]
congrats on the move again(said that on your wordpress.com blog) !!
@pp: Thanks! Don’t think I can ever see me stopping pic taking altogether just that whether they make it into the blog is another thing altogether. But thanks for the encouragement, it pushes me to try even harder definitely =)
The whole history of your blogging!!!!!
I think everyone started off crappy as well, I started off with no background what so ever. Now, I have a background…and steadily improving…
I hope your new blog would be as great as your old one!!!!!!!
It’s also good to see you posting too!!!!!
I can’t wait for new photo shoots as your shoots are just amazing!!!!!!
@Rin: Not exactly the whole history actually. I suspect there’s lots more embarrassing and ugly moments where I chose to subconsciously omit somewhere between those timelines, heheh ^^;
Personally, I’d think no backgrounds is better than having a background that makes ppl wonder: “Is that like… two pieces of paper taped together badly?” lol But thankfully, as you’ve said, ppl do improve (at least I’d like to think that I did!)
After two months away from taking lots of pics (only switch the camera on once during this entire two months), I think I would most likely be doing some photos soon, hopefully they don’t turn out bad from lack of practice ^^;
Congrats on getting your own domain.
“the shino”, cool name you have chosen.
Samejima here to support your blog till the end.
Lolololol.
@samejima: Thanks! Hopefully this will be the blog goes through major upheavals and everyone really loses their patience with me ^^;
Thanks for the support! Really appreciated~ =)
This is one of the best ways to start off your new self hosted blog!
I really had a blast reading your story and looking at your cheesecake shots.
The Theme is great aswell!
@Blowfish: Glad you liked the story, I personally like reading people’s stories as well. Glad to know I didn’t choose the wrong theme, so far the theme seems to have gotten a warm response, so I guess I started off correct~ xD
Love the new site (and name ^^)
I have to say congrats for the Maryan picture , it’s totally awesome , great idea and love it ^^
And thanks for telling us a little of your story , always interesting to get to know people better
btw i love the boxes on the first pic :p
@James: Thanks@
I do really wish I could come out with more ideas like Maryan definitely, outwardly I think I blame that most figures cause me to take the more boring scenes, but I suspect if one really tried, lots of scenes can be dreamed up for any type of figure.
Glad you liked that little bit about me, as mentioned in response to Blowfish, I like reading about others as well =)
Care to make a guess on which figure boxes they are? Bonus points for the boxes behind that cannot be seen xP
-Thanks for the read.
-In the same boat as you as far as looking at old pictures. There’s a lot of things I thought that I did were sweet when I look back now are just plain awful.
-Messing around with themes is fun. Frustrating sometimes, but fun.
@super rats: You’re welcome, hope you enjoyed the read though =)
Guess we’re always living in the moment, what seems right right now might not exactly be the best thing. With photos it’s pretty bad though, since they tend to remain behind as evidence, heheh.
True enough, themes are really fun to mess around with, I’m just hoping one day I don’t break something since I don’t back up ^^;
that is one awesome figurine and gundam models you have there~!
how much have you spend on those? XD
you even have a stage for your figurines for photo shooting~
thats one cool thing~!
buy eroges for thier box! you are the first one that i know says that! ^o^
Thanks, I really don’t dare to total how much I’ve spent so far though, I think I’d probably kick myself if I realized on paper how much I’ve spent. Some things are better left unknown…
But games really have much nicer boxes than figures more often than not, and they actually take up less space too! :p
